Militaries around the world have been keeping their attention on the development of software defined radios, SDR, due to its hardware and software architectural flexibility in accommodating technological upgrades and replacement. The operational advantage of SDR is its ability to reconfigure itself efficiently at time of use, rather than at time of design, enabling it to provide multiple nodes and communication bands for its users.
It has been widely spoken that in the near future, most radio systems will be moving towards SDR architecture, making it vital for militaries to have information access to this technology. Most militaries have been duly convinced on SDR’s delivery due to its interoperability and flexibility while keeping cost effectively reasonable.
While the benefits of SDR are prominent, it has its share of technical challenges as well. The choice of its architecture is highly reliant on the available technology of its components (eg. Processors and platform technology). Software assurance is a major concern to its users as it will determine the overall reliability of SDR. Unfortunately, testing for both hardware and software reliability has always been a challenge to most engineers.
Despite the issues, militaries continue to invest resources in managing the technical challenges in SDR. The next state art of technology based on SDR technology has emerged, with the intelligence to adapt to current operating parameters. It is affirmative that this trend of radio technology is here to stay, making it crucial for all militaries to have regular access to SDR technical know-how, as a competitive advantage in the operational domain.
The course is intended to provide an overview of SDR, however, the focus of the course would be to address the technical complexity and challenges those engineers and programme managers have in assuring optimal performance of SDR.
